Clouhaus Hotel / RooMoo Design Studio — Inside Chongqing’s Mountain-Top Boutique Hotel (2026)

Imagine a hotel perched high in the mountains, seamlessly blending modern design with ancient craftsmanship. That’s the Clouhaus Hotel, a stunning transformation of a former sales office into a 24-room boutique retreat nestled 1,200 meters above sea level on Jinfo Mountain in Chongqing, China. But here’s where it gets controversial: can a concrete structure truly honor its natural surroundings while pushing the boundaries of sustainable design? Let’s dive in.

Designed by RooMoo Design Studio and led by architects Ray Zhang, Marine Bois, and Tao Zhang, this project is a masterclass in repurposing existing structures. Originally built as a sales office for a resort development, the five-level concrete building has been reimagined to reflect the mountain’s rugged beauty and celebrate local craftsmanship. With a total area of 1,915 m², the hotel is set to open its doors in 2025, offering guests a unique blend of luxury and eco-conscious design.

And this is the part most people miss: the hotel’s success isn’t just in its architecture but in its collaboration with local artisans. Customized furniture by Yizhu Decoration Engineering Co., Ltd., and wood products from Chongqing Nanchuan District Dingteng Wood Processing Factory highlight the region’s rich heritage. This fusion of global design principles and local expertise raises a thought-provoking question: How can modern architecture preserve cultural identity without sacrificing innovation?

Located in Nanchuan District, Chongqing, the Clouhaus Hotel is more than just a place to stay—it’s a statement about sustainable transformation and the power of place-making. As you explore the project gallery, you’ll notice how every detail, from the layout to the materials, pays homage to its mountainous setting. But what do you think? Does this project strike the right balance between modernity and tradition? Share your thoughts in the comments—we’d love to hear your take!
