In a recent study by Ireland Prestige Tours, two of Newcastle's most beloved spots, Jesmond Dene and the Victoria Tunnel, have been unveiled as top-tier destinations, ranking among the UK's 50 best-kept secrets. But here's where it gets controversial: while these places might be considered hidden gems to outsiders, to the people of Newcastle, they're as familiar as the city itself!
Jesmond Dene: A Local's Paradise
Jesmond Dene, a public park nestled near the city center, needs no introduction to the Geordies. During the Coronavirus lockdown, it became a sanctuary for the residents of Heaton and Jesmond, offering a much-needed escape into nature. With its vast woodland walks, a petting zoo, and a historic mill, it's easy to see why this place is a local favorite. And let's not forget the Armstrong Bridge Food Market, a perfect spot for a bite and some local produce after a refreshing walk in the Dene.
The Victoria Tunnel: A Subterranean Surprise
Further down the Ouseburn Valley, the Victoria Tunnel, opened in 1842 as an underground wagonway, has a rich history. It transported coal from the long-gone Spital Tongues Colliery to ships waiting on the Tyne. Despite falling into disuse, it found new life as an air-raid shelter during World War II. Today, it stands as a unique attraction, taking the top spot on TripAdvisor's list of things to do in Newcastle. And this is the part most people miss: there's still coal dust and graffiti from WWII in an area of the tunnel not accessible to the public, offering a glimpse into the past.
The study, which used Instagram data, ranked Jesmond Dene as the 8th most popular hidden gem in the UK with 44,900 Instagram hashtags. The Victoria Tunnel followed closely, finishing 29th, equal with several other attractions. But the real winner? Primrose Hill in London, with a whopping 318,000 posts.
