An Ancient Discovery: Unveiling a Rare Celtic Coin in East Yorkshire

A remarkable find has been made by a metal detectorist in Lelley, East Yorkshire, shedding light on a potential ancient trade between two tribes. The coin, dating back to the Iron Age (50-10 BC), is a variant of the Corieltauvi tribe's gold stater, crafted by a Celtic tribe that once ruled over Lincolnshire and the southern banks of the Humber. This discovery is considered incredibly rare, as it appears to be only the second of its kind ever found.

The coin was unearthed in the Iron-Age territory of the Parisi tribe, who inhabited a portion of East Yorkshire. The Corieltavian mint, located at Sleaford, is believed to have produced this unique coin, with an intriguing extra pip on the domino, adding to its mystery. Coralie Thomson, from the auction house David Duggleby in Scarborough, highlights the significance of this find, stating that it provides evidence of trade between the two tribes, rather than being a result of raiding or robbery.

The Corieltauvi stater, weighing 5.5g and composed of 33% gold, 54% copper, and 9.5% silver, features five dots and a horse depiction. The extra pellet on this coin is what makes it so rare, as Corieltauvi staters typically had four pellets. This discovery challenges previous assumptions and adds a fascinating layer to the historical narrative.

The coin is set to be auctioned by David Duggleby, with a pre-sale estimate of £2,000 to £4,000. Thomson emphasizes the potential impact of this discovery on the collectability and value of the coin, as the extra pellet significantly influences its desirability among collectors. This find invites further exploration of ancient trade routes and the interactions between different tribes during the Iron Age.
