Nio appears poised to expand its Clean Parks Initiative with new trims for the ET5 and ET5 Touring, according to a regulatory filing.
The filings suggest a Fresh edition line—specifically the Clean Parks Edition—for both the ET5 sedan and its ET5 Touring wagon. This move could serve to mark the fourth anniversary of Nio’s environmental program, even as official launch dates remain undecided. December 18 stands out as a key date to watch, given its tie to the initiative’s milestone.
The regulatory documents, cited from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, show that Nio has applied for the Clean Parks Edition variants for both models after introducing the Champion Edition earlier in July. The changes appear on the models’ specification lists, with the standout modification being the addition of the Clean Parks Edition badge alongside the existing Champion Edition on the rear.
Nio first unveiled the Clean Parks program during the ET5’s debut at Nio Day on December 18, 2021. CEO William Li announced a pledge to invest RMB 100 million (about $14.1 million) over three years to promote electric-vehicle adoption and the development of clean energy infrastructure within global nature reserves. The aim was to help create self-sustaining, low-carbon energy systems that protect the integrity of sensitive ecosystems.
As part of its open-platform approach, Nio partnered with several international environmental organizations to advance Clean Parks. Collaborations have included the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Danish Society for Nature Conservation, the Danish Nature Foundation, and China’s Giant Panda National Park.
The upcoming ET5 and ET5 Touring Clean Parks Edition would seem to memorialize these efforts. While no formal launch date has been disclosed, December 18—the fourth anniversary of the ET5 and Clean Parks initiative—remains a focal point for observers.
In related moves, Nio refreshed the ET5 and ET5 Touring lineup on May 25, keeping the starting price at RMB 298,000. The company followed up on July 4 with Champion Edition variants for the ET5, ET5 Touring, and EC6, each priced above their standard counterparts to reflect the special trims tied to Nio’s motorsport heritage. In October, a limited black-themed ET5 Touring inspired by a sci-fi world debuted, with a production cap of 555 units.
All of this underscores a broader strategic shift: Nio is actively aligning its product lineup with distinctive features and partnerships that resonate with environmentally conscious buyers and long-term enthusiasts alike. How much impact these edition models will have on buyer perception remains a topic for debate, inviting readers to weigh the value of niche editions against broader EV affordability and sustainability goals.
