Two SFU Faculty Honored with the Order of Canada: A Celebration of Innovation and Impact
The prestigious Order of Canada has recognized two esteemed members of Simon Fraser University's Faculty of Communication, Art, and Technology: Barry Truax and John Willinsky. Their appointments highlight their significant contributions to the fields of acoustic communication and public access to research, respectively.
Truax, a professor emeritus, and Willinsky, a university research associate, have been celebrated for their groundbreaking work. Truax's journey began in 1973 when he joined the World Soundscape Project, a pioneering initiative in soundscape studies and acoustic ecology. Willinsky, a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and professor emeritus at Stanford University, founded the Public Knowledge Project (PKP) in 1998. This project has revolutionized open access scholarship, making academic knowledge freely available. The PKP's scholarly publishing platform is now used by journals worldwide, promoting accessibility and collaboration. Willinsky's commitment to open access aligns with the Order of Canada's values, striving for a more inclusive and accessible society.
