Steelers Draft 2026: Should Pittsburgh Take Jeremiyah Love at No. 21? | NFL Mock Draft Analysis (2026)

The Pittsburgh Steelers are making headlines as they look to enhance their roster in the upcoming NFL Draft. With Kenneth Gainwell approaching free agency, there’s speculation that the Steelers might seek a new running back to team up with Jaylen Warren during the offseason.

In her most recent 2026 mock draft for NFL.com, analyst Cynthia Frelund has predicted that the Steelers will select standout running back Jeremiyah Love from Notre Dame, choosing him at the 21st overall spot in the first round.

Frelund emphasized Love's potential to make a significant impact in both the running and passing games, stating, "Love's potential impact in both the pass and run game is very high -- like Bijan Robinson levels." She noted that for Love to enjoy a prosperous rookie season—one that mirrors the impressive campaign put forth by Bijan Robinson in 2025—he would need a solid offensive line to help him acclimate to the speed and complexity of the NFL. According to her analysis, Pittsburgh had the 10th best offensive line in the league last season.

It’s worth mentioning that only five years ago, the Steelers selected Najee Harris in the first round, making it intriguing to consider whether adding Love would be the right choice for the team, especially now that they're entering a new era under head coach Mike McCarthy.

Love's Impressive College Performance

Jeremiyah Love had a remarkable college career. As a true freshman in 2023, he recorded 385 rushing yards and scored one touchdown while playing for the Fighting Irish. In 2024, he stepped up his performance significantly, amassing 1,125 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns as Notre Dame made a run to the College Football Playoff National Championship, ultimately losing to Ohio State and its star players Will Howard and Jack Sawyer.

This past season, Love further established himself as one of the premier talents in college football, finishing with an impressive 1,372 rushing yards, 280 receiving yards, and 21 total touchdowns, which earned him a third-place finish in the prestigious Heisman Trophy race.

Is Love the Right Fit for the Steelers?

The uncertainty surrounding Gainwell's return adds complexity to the Steelers' decision-making process. He had a career year, accumulating 1,023 yards from scrimmage and eight touchdowns, and was named Team MVP, so it remains to be seen whether the new coaching staff will choose to re-sign him.

If the Steelers decide to part ways with Gainwell, they will undoubtedly need to bolster their running back position alongside Warren. Additionally, 2025 third-round pick Kaleb Johnson could see increased playing time after a lackluster rookie season.

Love brings an exciting skill set to the table, showcasing speed, patience, and receiving capabilities that could allow him to become a key contributor right away. His ability to create big plays makes him a thrilling option whenever he has the ball in his hands.

However, it’s important to note that the Steelers may have more pressing needs to address, particularly at the wide receiver position, which could take precedence over bolstering the backfield. While Love would undoubtedly enhance the passing game and potentially fill the void left by Gainwell, the team has significant gaps to fill in other areas, such as at receiver and defensive back. This raises the question: Would selecting Love truly be the best move for the Steelers, or should they focus on addressing their more urgent needs first?

What do you think? Is a running back the right choice, or should the Steelers prioritize other positions? Share your thoughts in the comments!
