A bold step forward: Thika Stadium is being upgraded to modern standards through a joint effort by Mod and Kiambu County.
The Ministry of Defence, via the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), has begun preparations for a comprehensive rehabilitation and upgrade of Thika Stadium in Kiambu County. This ambitious project is a collaboration with the Kiambu County Government under Governor Kimani Wamatangi’s leadership, aligned with the direction of the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces, H.E. Dr. William Samoei Ruto.
To kick off the process, Dr. Patrick Mariru, Principal Secretary for Defence, conducted a site inspection to evaluate the stadium’s current condition and identify priority improvement areas. This visit marks the start of a coordinated effort between national and county levels to modernise the facility and raise its standards.
The upgrade plan targets three core areas: upgrading the stadium’s infrastructure, expanding athlete-support amenities, and enhancing the overall spectator experience. When complete, Thika Stadium is expected to become a modern hub for sports development, talent cultivation, and community engagement within Kiambu County and beyond.
During the inspection, Dr. Mariru reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to delivering high-quality public sports facilities, stressing that such investments empower youth and foster healthy, active communities. He also noted that the Ministry of Defence will execute the project with professionalism, efficiency, and strict adherence to timelines.
Joining him were Brigadier Titus Sokobe, Chief of National Projects at Defence Headquarters, and Ali Osman Korar, Kiambu County CECM for Youth Affairs, Sports and Communication. The officials underscored the essential role of strong intergovernmental collaboration in ensuring the project’s success.
The Ministry of Defence looks forward to close cooperation with Governor Wamatangi’s administration and all stakeholders to realise the transformation of Thika Stadium into a modern, world-class sports facility.
